Fight Oil with Oil

If you have dry skin, chances are you have heard that using oil-based skincare products can help lock in moisture and protect dry, chapped skin. Or maybe you use a natural oil to help take off your eye makeup at the end of a long day. But if we told you to start using oil on your already oily skin, would you think we were crazy?

To tame oily skin, it seems like common sense to try to reduce the oils that are causing your breakouts. However, stripping the skin of oil only encourages the body to make more, leading to the cruel, painful cycle of over-washing your face. Instead, by using a technique called oil cleansing, you can use a natural oil to remove dirt, debris, and oily residue from your skin.

The Benefits of Using Oil

Natural oils are great for the skin because they absorb quickly, penetrate deeply, and calm and balance excess oil production. Moreover, the most potent revitalizing and anti-aging botanicals are in oil form or are oil soluble, so you’ll get the benefits of a glowing complexion without chemical ingredients.

Oil-based skincare is also a great choice because it’s easy on your wallet--while there are cheaper products available, even the most expensive products only require a few drops per use, making oil cleansing an affordable luxury.

Which Oils Should You Use?

The most affordable and least comedogenic oils available are plant oils such as jojoba, rosehip, hemp seed, and tamanu oils. Most importantly though stay away from oils that will ultimately do more harm than good by clogging your pores. The most obvious ones are petroleum and mineral oils because these are derived from crude oil and have actually been linked to cancer. The rule of thumb: stick to natural oils that aren’t man-made and don’t contain extra additives and when in doubt, look for products designed specifically to be applied to the face that feature these ingredients.
